The Disabled Students’ Program is recognized for its commitment to ensuring that all students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities at UC Berkeley and help students to achieve academic and personal success through its programs. DSP offers a wide range of services for students with disabilities. These services are individually designed, and based on the specific needs of each student.
The DSP Auxiliary Services Assistant reports directly to the Disabled Students’ Program Supervisor of Auxiliary Services (or designee). The DSP Auxiliary Service Support Assistant will work directly with a disabled student to perform disability-related tasks that are a required component of their coursework. The DSP Student Support Service Assistant does not work independently. The DSP Student Support Service Assistant is expected to follow all campus safety procedures, DSP policies and practices, and follow Berkeley campus and University-wide policies, procedures, and regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position involve performing specific disability-related tasks as assigned by DSP. Tasks typically involve assisting with the physical manipulation of lab materials, adjusting/moving lab equipment, and taking dictation for lab recording of data and completion of lab worksheets, taking dictation for tests/exams, describe visual information, and read printed academic materials. All tasks are performed during the assigned schedule. The DSP-Student Support Service Assistant is expected to understand information and concepts related to the work as assigned.
Duties of an Auxiliary Assistant
Follow all lab safety procedures. Physical manipulation of lab materials as described by student. Adjusting/moving of lab equipment as described by student. Taking dictation for lab recording of data and completion of worksheets during lab.
Test Taking Assistance
Taking dictation/recording answers for quizzes/tests/examinations.
Describing visual information. Assisting with in-class assignments. Describing visual information, Assisting with iClickers.
Reading aloud academically required materials.
- Currently enrolled UCB student, and eligible to work.
- Knowledge of lab equipment and safety procedures (if applicable).
- Ability to follow directions.
- Appropriate academic background. All majors are accepted, but we especially need STEM backgrounds (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
