Yes. The outcome of a student and their Disability Specialist’s engagement in the interactive process may be a denial of the accommodation that the student requested.
Reasons for denying a student’s request for a specific accommodation include:
-
-
The Disability Specialist has not identified a disability-related need for the requested accommodation.
-
The Disability Specialist has identified a more appropriate way to address the disability-related barrier that the student’s request is intended to address.
-
The Disability Specialist has determined that the requested accommodation is a personal service.
-
The Disability Specialist has determined that the requested accommodation would result in a fundamental alteration of UC Berkeley’s academic standards or goals.
-
The Disability Specialist has determined that the requested accommodation is not reasonable.
-
If a student’s request is not approved, the student is informed of this finding, and the student is also informed of any additional documentation that would be necessary to reconsider the request, as well as any alternative accommodations that the Disability Specialist has identified as appropriate.
If the student does not agree with the Disability Specialist’s determination, within UC Berkeley, they have recourse to pursue DSP’s Complaint Resolution Process and/or a complaint with the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination
