What are accommodations?

An accommodation is an adjustment to a practice or policy that removes a barrier that exists based on the impact of an individual’s disability in the context of the practice or policy. Academic accommodations allow for disabled students to have equal access to participate in their academic programs at UC Berkeley. While in elementary and secondary school settings it is permissible for accommodations to change the goals and standards of the curriculum, in the postsecondary setting, instructors are not required to fundamentally alter their course goals or standards in order to implement an accommodation.

If an instructor has a concern about the appropriateness of implementing an accommodation for which a student has been approved, they should contact the Disability Specialist listed at the end of the student’s Letter of Accommodation directly.
